Near Chendipji Trongsa farmers lay recently harvested bamboo poles on the road for cars to drive over. This splits the bamboo into pieces to be woven into bamboo matting.
How true. Namgay doesn't care much for bamboo baskets and mats because he grew up in a place where they were plentiful and so not valuable. But I'm trying to talk him into making a bamboo house hee hee. So much cheaper than concrete and ribar.
Dawa it is a great material. I would love to incorporate bamboo into a house's structure. It is beautiful and economical. But Namgay is a big obstacle!
I always start all suggestions with my husband with, "As senior management, I say we do (fill in the blank)." I mean, who doesn't think wife=senior management? C'mon now! *snort*
Well. Yes. We are senior management. Thing is, in most instances the system works pretty well. But when it comes to bamboo he will dig his heels in. It's pretty funny. Why take a stand about bamboo, right? Why not world peace or something? Also, and I need to put this as delicately as possible since there is Dawa, a representative of Bhutanese men among us here on the blog: Bhutanese men are the most profoundly stubborn people on the planet. Greatest strength, greatest weakness and all that. Namgay will not bend like bamboo sliced by tires. He is more like the stones that we will eventually build with. If there is any bamboo in our house I will have to trick him into thinking its rebar or something.
Ha ha. You are right. While I cannot speak for other Bhutanese men or be a representative sample, I can tell you that I've the undesirable distinction among my relations, friends and colleagues of being the most stubborn of all! But let me tell you it's only when the issues are personal (when I don't give views, accept views, and do not budge an inch) and I do not deny north is north, south is south, etc. Yes, generally speaking there are men who are as stubborn as rock (as we say) and as meek as sunflower (again as we say), both qualities in one man!
Certainly there are worse traits. My Scottish husband hails from the land of cheap folks and where every sentence starts with the F word. Obviously, we are well matched. :P
Bamboo is so pretty! Maybe you can build a small studio for yourself out of bamboo? Or...or...build the house while he is traveling.

Who knows bamboo house, home of the poor not long ago, could be a necessity of modernity for all until bamboos go extinct!
